Sheila Pontis was born in Buenos Aires, Argentina where she completed a five-year course in Graphic Design at the University of Buenos Aires (UBA, FADU).

When she finished her BA studies, she moved to Barcelona to complete an MA in Editorial Techniques at University of Barcelona. Since 2005, she has been working on her PhD thesis, a five-year programme at the University of Barcelona. The aim of her practice-based research project is to develop a model of analysis for representing and improving the communication of complex information with a case study of Underground Diagrammatic Maps. Her project will focus on illuminating the stage of information organization in the process of design, which is not completely revealed in previous studies.

Since last October, her PhD case study (London Underground Map) brought her to London as an associate student at the University of the Arts London, and an affiliated member of both Information Environment research unit (London College of Communication) and TrAIN research unit (Transnational Art Identity and Nation).
